The Engineer was a member of Faction Paradox. He created Charlie Dickens as a Frankenstein's monster of cobbled-together bones and biodata and books, and gave him a shadow-pen to turn John Gault into a Shift. He and his associates rode into Machina on dinosaurs, wearing their ceremonial masks, to confront Gault. They battled Gault and his men and lost. They were to be hanged at noon, when they had no shadow s to use, but Pierre Light (actually one of the Celestis) shone a stage light on them so that they had shadows with which to cut their ropes. In the shootout that followed, Dickens did his job and Gault's biodata was overwritten. (PROSE: Print the Legend)
