Shifts  were a form of conceptual entity first developed by the Celestis shortly after the creation of Mictlan. They eventually passed the technology on to various groups in the outside universe. (PROSE: Alien Bodies)

Creation Edit

To create a Shift, a living and sentient being had to be placed in a stable state of flux until the material existence of the subject became impossible to observe and scientifically unprovable. Once the physical and temporal mass of the being had been nullified, the being theoretically only existed as a series of memetic connections. In effect the meaning of the being survived, while the mass did not.  As the resulting Shift could only exist as a pattern of meanings — a series of disembodied ideas — it could go on to implant itself into any object that held any meaning. For example, a Shift could implant itself in any recorded message or piece of written text. As a result, many factions attempted to use Shifts as a form of sentient propaganda.
